Straight from LJ Charity Gifts page:

With the purchase of our charity v-gift, you'll contribute to PFLAG, a network of support groups that provide resources for the health and well-being of GLBT persons as well as their friends and family. PFLAG celebrates diversity and envisions a society in which all sexual orientations and gender identities are embraced. The organization operates on the maxim that only with dignity, respect and equality can individual and collective human potential be reached. Support is welcomed by all who share in the vision of a world that doesn't foster discrimination and protects the civil rights deserved by all.

Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians & GaysThe organization began in 1973 after founder Jeane Manford marched with New York City's Gay Pride Parade in a show of solidarity with her recently-beaten gay son. Manford became politically active because police were far from being a reliable or sufficient source of help with the injustice of his case. Originally PFLAG was a single support group, the first meeting of which received an attendance of only 20 people. Over the course of 35 years it has blossomed into a far reaching network of community chapters and continues to grow. For more information contact the PFLAG National Office, 1726 M Street, NW, Suite 400, Washington, D.C. 20036 USA, or visit

LiveJournal used a number of guidelines in determining which charity to support, including but not limited to the breadth of the charity's mandate, its commitment to establishing long-term, sustainable and viable programs and services, and the independent ratings of agencies like and Because of LiveJournal's international userbase, we also thought it important to pick an organization that has both national (U.S.) and international locations.

To determine net proceeds, LiveJournal will deduct only the actual expenses relating to the credit card transactions. Each credit card provider and payment processor charges varying fees. Typically the fee involves a fixed fee per transaction plus a percentage of the sale price. In determining net proceeds, LiveJournal will not deduct any other expenses, such as salaries of employees, cost of servers, or any other operating costs. The net proceeds will be donated by LiveJournal on its account and not on behalf of the purchaser. Purchasers will not be entitled to any tax credit or deduction otherwise applicable to charitable deductions by individuals.

About the Purple Rhino:

Return of the Purple Rhino!
Originally created for the subway walls of 1974 Boston, the Purple Rhino represents a gentle and intelligent, yet often maligned and misunderstood creature whom, when attacked, defends itself ferociously. Its lavender color was chosen because of its association with the gay rights movement of the time; its red heart symbolizes the love uniting all peoples. Proceeds from the Purple Rhino v-gift will go the Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians & Gays (PFLAG), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support for GLBT persons and their friends and families.

I actually wouldn't mind buying/receiving this gift!

There shall be an LJ strike this coming friday, or for those of you in different time zones, PLEASE LOOK HERE!

Why is there an LJ Strike?
Mostly in esponse to LJ Heads on how they conducted business within the past few months, especially concerning the recent removal of the creation basic accounts.

So for 24 hours, people will not post or comment on LJ.
It shall be murder for me.

What's this about?

* It's about free and ad-free LiveJournal accounts being abolished for new members, ignoring the advice from the newly-formed Advisory Board.
* It's about LJ staff trying to sneak this decision in under the radar, and when people found out, telling the users it was done 'to make the signup process less confusing'.
* It's about LJ staff failing to apologize for trying to hide the facts from view and for lying about the actual reasons for their actions.
* And finally, it's about the latest decision to hide certain user interests from the list of Most Popular Interests, some of them being fanfiction, bisexuality, sex and depression. This decision was not announced or explained in any way. Users found out for themselves.

Here is some info on why one should participate in this. Taken from [profile] yuriko_yakuza's journal:

For those of you who don't already know, there has been a strike scheduled for Friday, March 21st, 2008, during which we hope to have many members of LiveJournal provide LJ with absolutely no content for twenty-four hours. This means no posting and no commenting. If you post elsewhere and have it set up to be posted through a feed on LiveJournal, don't do it. Stay away from LiveJournal for twenty-four hours. That can't be too hard, can it? I know some of you are probably quite active on LiveJournal and will find it hard to stay away for an entire day, just as I will, but this is something that needs to be done, to show the people running LiveJournal that we're watching the changes they are making, that we're paying attention, that we're discontent, and that we want to be heard and taken in to consideration. We are not simply users who can be tossed to the side and ignored. We are the people who make up LiveJournal. Without us, without the content we create, without our words, our voices, our creativity, our participation, there would be no LiveJournal. This is a fact, and it needs to be realized and understood and then taken in to consideration when making decisions regarding the way that LiveJournal is run. The strike is only a few days away, so there isn't all too much time to prepare. While this is unfortunate, it isn't enough to keep this strike from taking place. It will take place, the second it is meant to, and it would be best to have as many people take part as possible. Please, spread the word. Spread it fast. There are only a few days to organize this. If you find that you care about LiveJournal or care about the people you interact with on LiveJournal or simply want it to remain a place where you can entertain yourself without constant censorship and money-hungry practices being thrown in without the consideration of those who use the service, act now. If you don't wish to spread the word, that is fine, but please: refrain from using LiveJournal on Friday, March 21st. Do something else for a change. It's for a good cause. (:

If you're not up to date about what is goin on with LJ, then read on!

LiveJournal/SUP is no longer allowing the creation of basic accounts after March 13th, 2008. Meaning TODAY is the last day to make a basic account. And for most of you, it's already too late!

What does this mean?

You will AUTOMATICALLY be upgraded to a plus account! Meaning there will be ads on your LJ if you made an account after March 13th.

Oh, and this was NOT mentioned in the news post! Sneaky bitches...they only stated that there is an easier way to create an account, and it's simpler. For whom? The company? Uh...yes.

For those of you with a basic account already, do not worry. I think things will still be the same, and you may not have to upgrade to a plus account. Please look at THIS POST for more information and links for your reference.

In case some of you are lazy whores individuals, let me break it down, from the knowledge I just gained in the past 20 mins:

1. no more basic after March 13th. you will be automatically upgraded to Plus
2. if you have a paid account, and your time will expire soon, you will more than likely NOT lost your usepics, but you MAY have LESS features. You will then be downgraded to a plus account. basic account. This has been edited due to finding out that if you have an account from before March 13th, 2008 you can go back and forth between basic and plus or paid.

BUT I just found out something that may be quite helpful to those using firefox!

There is an add on called Adblock Plus, which gets rid of ads on your page, so it will be like a basic account when you surf through your own journal. So go ahead and get a plus account, and get the cool features like more icons and cellphone posting and what not. Just install the plugin and VOILA! (I'm bad at french...) No more ads!

*goes to install herself, for other websites*

Truthfully, I don't really care about this new change cuz I have a permanent account, so I will never EVER see an ad on my journal. But I do care for those who will have no choice BUT to sign up for a Plus account.  So go armed properly with this information, and sign up for an account!

Good thing for loopholes!

here is an INTERESTING THREAD started by the VP of Production for LiveJournal.

Edit 2: below the cut is proof of the magic of adblock plus, provided by [profile] cindy_reddeer

To Whom It May Concern,

DON'T send me messages through LJ, unless you REALLY don't want others to see the message. Don't send me silly messages that can be easily posted on an entry in my journal. It makes no sense!

If the message is not private enough, leave a comment. If it is private, leave/send me a message through LJ. Otherwise, you'll tick me off and I won't reply.

Yes, [profile] falcongrl89, this is also including you! ^^;

But other than than, I love it! ^^

[ profile] mu51ng_dag0n for finding this quote:

[ profile] jssangel: In the eyes of Six Apart, is Harry Potter Fanfic, featuring an under 18 Harry an example of child pornography?
What about illustrations designed to accompany the same?

[ profile] barakb25: No. Child pornogaphy is fairly well defined by law and I have not seen any reports of it in HP Fanfic.

Um...despite "clearing up" their TOS, the have already suspended a user for FICTIONAL FAN ART!

keep in mind that Harry Potter and its characters are not even fucking real.and what's even funnier, or not so, is that they no longer STRIKETHROUGH suspended accounts. They now BOLD suspended journals in a poor attempt to not cause attention to their conduct.

i dont really care about the money i used for thie permanent account, i can always earn it back and then some, but i do have a problem with how theyre handling this situation with their vague clarifications and not giving the notice they said they would before suspending an account.

wow....way to fuck yourself over LJ.
